Choosing a Sustainable Wedding Dress
You deserve to wear the dress of your dreams and one that aligns with your values on your wedding day. Many of us feel uneasy about the clothes we buy, we know there are ecological and ethical issues with their production, but we struggle to understand how to make better choices.
Let’s explore the factors to consider in choosing a sustainable wedding dress.
One consideration is the fabric or raw materials used. Natural fabrics such as silk and cotton are biodegradable. Oil-based synthetic fabrics (think polyester, nylon, spandex) are cheaper but don’t decompose, and their production harms the planet.
Where the garment was made also relates to its sustainability. We make our dresses here in NYC; we can oversee our expert craftspeople and lessen our footprint by utilizing the heritage dress trade in our backyard. There is little transparency in offshore production.
The waste incurred and its disposal is another consideration. We use deadstock, high-end designer fabric over-runs and work with FabScrap to recycle scraps.
At Maybelle, we have a slow approach to bridal fashion and consciously design each custom and couture piece. Recycling vintage materials prevent them from landfill and creates a coveted one-of-a-kind look. Choosing a sustainable gown is not just about your wedding day. It’s about helping preserve the environment and ensuring that our children and future generations can thrive.
