A New Jersey Library's Hidden Treasures: Vintage Wedding Gowns
Every garment carries a history, a journey it has embarked on, and a story it longs to share. Earlier this year, I read an article about Adele, a vintage wedding dress enthusiast and the Fair Lawn Public Library director who lends dresses from her collection to brides. Her story, which I also shared on my Instagram, went viral, leading to an influx of unsolicited donations nationwide! I was thrilled when our mutual friend, Amber, introduced us, and I felt an instant connection with Adele.
As I made a day trip to the library to meet her, check out her collection of dresses, and gladly help her clear some of the amassed vintage pieces from the crowded library space, I was filled with anticipation and excitement. It was a genuinely inspiring experience. The evening before, she held a benefit fashion show of gowns and invited the public to take one if it was their fancy. This event not only raised funds for the library but also brought the community together in appreciation of vintage fashion.
Adele’s infectious enthusiasm for vintage bridal was evident. She knew many of the dress's unique quirks and often the bride's history. Her passion for these pieces and her knowledge of their stories were inspiring. Almost every gown I picked up resulted in a detailed discussion—she would show me the newspaper clipping sent in with it, find the matching headpiece, or tell me that she had cleaned it at home.
I left the library with many antique dresses, most needing major restoration and restyling. This process involves careful cleaning, repairing any damages, and sometimes even altering the design to make it more contemporary while preserving its vintage charm. I promised Adele I would do my best to find homes for each piece- sustainably reimagining them so the magic of their past would continue.
